"Then, six months ago, we went back, and you couldn't move.
"Five years ago, the restaurant was empty when we'd play," Wilkin says. "In some of the songs, you can hear birds tweeting, because we were playing at, like, 6 a.m." They still perform at the Bourne Poacher. "It was very cozy in there," Wilkin says. "I'd come over, and we would play in the pub and get hysterically drunk." The guys holed up in Wilkin's caravan (a camper van) in his parents' back garden to record. "Danny's family owns a restaurant, and they live in the same building," Roche says. Hometown support: Before joining Braun's family of pop stars, Roche, who dropped out of high school, and Wilkin, who quit university, got support from family and friends. After the guys posted their funny Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas video in 2012, he scooped them right up. Eventually, those caught the ear of Scooter Braun, best known as the man who discovered Justin Bieber. Thank goodness for YouTube: Rixton, which took its name from a local road (the group originally went by Relics, a name already taken by another band), built its fan base by posting YouTube covers of tunes such as Usher's Numb, Taylor Swift's I Knew You Were Trouble, Rita Ora's How We Do (Party) and Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up. It includes Roche swinging naked on a Wrecking Ball Morgan, clad in a loincloth, channeling his inner Katy Perry and Bagnall doing his best interpretative Lady Gaga dance with a billowing black cape made of trash bags. 2013 video Make Out is a brave sendup of big-name music videos. But what makes the Manchester, England-based band really stand out is that the four friends - Roche, bassist and keyboardist Danny Wilkin, guitarist Charley Bagnall and drummer Lewi Morgan - are downright hilarious.

"When people call us a boy band, it's kind of annoying, but boy bands also get loads of money and women," says lead singer Jake Roche.
